NOGALES, Ariz. – Border agents seized over 11,000 pounds of marijuana in Nogales during a smuggling attempt.

Immigration and Custom Enforcement along with Homeland Security Investigations conducted an ongoing investigation and noticed two trailers laden with marijuana.

The driver was attempting to smuggle the drugs into the United States through the Mariposa Port of Entry near Industrial Park Drive.

The first semi traveled to Bell Road where the driver pulled over to unhook the trailer. Border agents asked to search the vehicle and discovered a false compartment.

Agents were aware a second semi would attempt to smuggle drugs into the U.S. When the driver approached the port of entry he was referred to secondary inspection where an X-ray machine revealed a compartment like the one found in the first truck.

“This team effort is a credit to the strong partnership shared by DHS agencies like ICE and CBP in Arizona,” Matt Allen, special agent in charge of ICE HIS in Arizona, said.

A total of 260 bales of pot were found in the first trailer weighing 6,013 pounds. Agents busted 244 bales of marijuana in the second trailer weighing 5,686 pounds.

The drugs had an estimated street value of $6 million.
