PHOENIX – A 26-year-old man is dead after an officer-involved shooting during a robbery in progress at a Phoenix convenience store Wednesday morning.

It happened shortly before 2 a.m. at 48th Street and McDowell Road. According to Sgt. Tommy Thompson of the Phoenix Police Department, the suspect opened fire at officers as he walked out of a 7-Eleven. The officers, who had responded to a call regarding a robbery in progress at the store, returned fire.

The suspect, later identified as Ernesto Lopez, jumped into a waiting car and fled the scene. Officers stopped that car a short time later near 38th Street and McDowell Road.

“It was found that that individual was in the car with some other people and he had died of his injuries, his gunshot wounds,” Thompson said.

Investigators talked to the other occupants of that vehicle. They were identified as Lopez's girlfriend, Jennathea Nozie, 26, and Antoinette Manzanares, 33, who drove the getaway car.

They each were charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of armed robbery.

The officers involved in the shooting were not injured. Those officers’ names have not been released. They have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting.

“Any time an officer is involved in a shooting, there’s an internal investigation, as well as a criminal investigation,” Thompson explained.
