MARICOPA, Ariz. – A Maricopa woman is accused of plotting to kill her pregnant friend before cutting open her stomach and stealing her baby.

Police say officers arrived at the victim’s home after receiving reports of a fire and found Kassandra Taruga holding two large butcher knives and a pair of scissors.

There were also diapers and clothes for the unborn child in the room. The suspect allegedly planned to take out the baby by cesarean section.

Police were able to stop Taruga before she could carry out the alleged plot. Both the expectant mother and baby are in good condition.

Investigators say Taruga has a documented history of schizophrenia. She faces charges of attempted murder, arson and burglary.
