PEORIA, Ariz. – A woman was hit by a truck and killed while crossing a Peoria street early Monday morning.

It happened near Northern and 109th avenues at about 5:30 a.m. when it was still dark.

According to Jay Davies of the Peoria Police Department, Sheila Garcia lived in a nearby apartment and was out for her morning walk.

Investigators said a 39-year-old Laveen man driving a truck saw Garcia crossing the street from north to south. While he hit his brakes and swerved in an attempt to avoid running her down, the vehicle's bumper hit her.

A passer-by from nearby Luke Air Force Base stopped and tried to help. The airman, who did not actually see the accident, performed CPR, but was not able to save the woman.

Garcia, 35,  pronounced dead at the scene.

The name of the driver has not been released, but police said he probably will not face charges. Investigators said it does not look like impairment was a factor in the accident.

Northern Avenue was closed between 107th and 111th avenues for several hours.
