SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Two men were arrested at Scottsdale Airport Friday afternoon after they were spotted taking a shortcut across the runway on their way to a restaurant.

A tower operator saw the males walking on the runway and reported the incident to airport operations, according to Sgt. Mark Clark with the Scottsdale Police Department.

A Scottsdale police officer was on the scene and contacted the two suspects as they were making their way across the east taxiway.

They were arrested without incident shortly before 3 p.m.

The runway was shut down for a short while until it was deemed safe to resume flight operations.

Clark said Cole Tyree and Travis Hiegel, both 19, claimed to have been working at a restaurant on the west side of the airport and were going to another restaurant on the east side of the airport.

At this point, they do not appear to have any motive other than taking what they perceived as a shortcut to their destination, Clark said.

Scottsdale police are working with federal authorities on criminal charges. The suspects were booked into Scottsdale city jail.
