Man walking across freeway ramp in Phoenix hit by car and killedPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX – A 61-year-old man who was apparently trying to walk across a freeway ramp was hit by a car and killed early Friday morning.
It happened at about 3 a.m. on the southbound State Route 51 off ramp to westbound Interstate 10.
According to the Department of Public Safety officer on the scene, investigators believe the man hopped over the retainer wall. That put him on the roadway, which he was crossing when a car heading west on the 202 to the 10 hit him. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers said the man was carrying identification so they know who he is, but they will not release his name until they can locate his next of kin. They are also trying to determine what his mental state might have been.
There was no disabled vehicle nearby, so investigators have no idea where the man came from or why he was trying to walk across the roadway.
The ramp was closed for about two hours.
