GILBERT, Ariz. -- Firefighters rescued a naked man from a sewer pipe in Gilbert Wednesday night.

Eugene Gimzelberg, 32, fell about 35 to 40 feet down the pipe in a retention area near Loop 202 and Higley Road, according to Sgt. Bill Balafas with the Gilbert Police Department.

People in the area heard his cries for help and called police.

Gilbert police officers responded to the scene then called the Fire Department for assistance. Gimzelberg, who was only wearing shoes, was pulled out of the sewer pipe after about 90 minutes.

Gimzelberg was transported to a local hospital in critical but stable condition. He reportedly suffered skull fractures and lung damage.

Gimzelberg was cited for trespassing and criminal damage.

Balafas said Gimzelberg had been using drugs the day before and thought police were after him.
