Tear gas used to get smugglers out of drop housePosted: Updated:
AVONDALE, Ariz. - The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Human Smuggling Unit arrested 13 illegal immigrants Tuesday after a standoff with human smugglers.
An investigation into a human smuggling load vehicle led police to an Avondale home near 107th Avenue and Buckeye Road.
MCSO SWAT deputies were called in to end a barricade situation that developed with the human smugglers. The deputies threw tear gas through the windows to force the smugglers out of the house.
Deputies believed the house was actively being used by a human smuggling organization to harbor illegal immigrants who were waiting to be transported to other locations throughout the country.
No injuries were sustained when the gas was deployed.
Deputies found one semi-automatic 9mm handgun and ammunition inside the home.
In the past two months, MCSO has arrested more than 230 drug traffickers and illegal immigrants.
