2 Wounded in early morning drive-by shooting on I-17, suspects on the loosePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX – Police are investigating an early morning drive-by shooting on Interstate 17 that sent two men to the hospital.
It happened in the northbound lanes of I-17 between Thomas Road and Indian School Road.
According to police, three men were driving home from work in downtown Phoenix between 2:30 and 3 a.m. Wednesday when two vehicles sped past them on the freeway. Somebody inside one of those vehicles opened fire.
The passenger in the front seat was hit in the shoulder and the face. The backseat passenger was shot in the leg. While their injuries are serious, both men are expected to survive. The names of the victims have not been released.
Police do not have any suspect information, nor do they have a description of the suspect vehicles.
While they are still trying to piece together what happened, investigators believe it's possible the two vehicles might have been involved in an altercation and the victims were caught in the middle, in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Interstate 17 was closed for hours from Thomas Road to Indian School Road while police investigated. That portion of the freeway has since reopened.
Police say they want people who live in the area to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activity. If you see anything unusual, you can call the Phoenix Police Department at 602-262-6151.
