TEMPE, Ariz. -- A Tempe police motorcycle officer was injured in a scuffle with a suspect during a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon.
The officer, whose name has not been released, attempted to stop a suspect in a speeding vehicle near Price Road and Apache Boulevard just before 2 p.m., according to Sgt. Steve Carbajal with the Tempe Police Department.
The driver failed to yield, eventually coming to a stop at a nearby apartment complex where he lives.
Carbajal said the officer tried to make contact with the driver, but he refused to get out of the vehicle.
The officer attempted to remove the suspect from the car and he pushed the officer away from him. When the officer tried to deploy his stun gun, Carbajal said the suspect slapped it away.
Ultimately, the officer was able to take the suspect into custody. He has been identified as Michael Berryhill, 22.
Berryhill was placed under arrest for aggravated assault on a police officer as well as exhibition of speed.
Both the officer and Berryhill were transported a local hospital for minor injuries.
