Phoenix Tutor Time evacuated after firePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- A Phoenix day-care center was evacuated Friday morning after a small fire broke out in the laundry room.
The staff at Tutor Time near 48th Street and Indian School Road evacuated 53 kids ranging in age from infants to 5 years old after a fire alarm sounded shortly after 8 a.m. Some of the children were rolled out in their cribs.
The children were taken to the Safeway store next door and parents were called to pick up their kids.
A sprinkler extinguished the fire, which was contained to the laundry room.
"The sprinkler head did activate and put the fire out and the fire alarm had activated, which notified the adults and the children to evacuate the building," said Phoenix fire Capt. Tony Mure.
There was little fire damage, but the center will be closed for the day due to water damage from the sprinkler system.
No injures were reported.
"We're very fortunate," Mure said. "The management team stayed very calm. The children stayed very, very calm."
