Fatal car accidents in TucsonPosted: Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Tragedy on the I-10 Sunday after a car flipped into oncoming traffic.
It happened at around 11 A.M. on I-10 near Cortaro. According to Northwest Fire, a van with seven family members on board was travelling eastbound near Cortaro Farms when the driver lost control of the vehicle.
The van rolled over the median and into the westbound lanes. One of the passengers, a teenager, died, six others were injured. DPS shut down the road for several hours.
"On a vehicle roll over we have some added hazards in terms of the traffic and it's imperative that we shut the freeway down for the safety for the victims as well as the emergency responders including fire ambulance and the law enforcement," said Captain Goldberg from Northwest Fire.
Four of the passengers were taken to UMC, two are in critical condition and two in serious condition.
Another fatal crash on the south side killed a 66-year-old man.
It happened Saturday afternoon near Campbell and Irvington.
Tucson police say the victim was crossing the street, outside of the crosswalk, when a white 90s Chevy pickup with a Sonoran license plate struck him.
Witnesses say the driver tried to stop, but couldn't brake in time. The victim went to the hospital, where he died hours later.
The suspect fled the scene before police got there.
