Work underway for moder streetcar project; Dial-a-ride service launches in OVPosted: Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. -- With the gem and mineral show wrapped up, work on the modern streetcar project is underway.
Work on the streetcar will lead to some traffic closures.
Southbound Granada from Cushing Street to the I-10 frontage road will be closed until May.
Crews will be starting with waterline and other utility work.
And Monday the regional transportation authority launched a new "dial-a-ride" program in Oro Valley.
The service will provide "curb-to-curb" service within a designated area costing $2.50.
The service has been a year in the making.
"It's important. It provides another transportation for the people of the community. It gives them opportunity to connect to the larger regional transportation system," said Jeremy Papuga of the Regional Transportation Authority.
"We've actually been having to tell seniors they can't ride because our service have been constrained. that's stopped. As of today, we're no more denying service. This is better for everybody," said Aimee Ramsey of the Town of Oro Valley.
And gas prices are higher in Tucson. Up about 11¢ in the last week.
