Teen safe after attempted abduction in MesaPosted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -- A teenage girl is safe after an attempted abduction in Mesa Sunday morning.
According to Mesa police Detective Steve Berry, the 14-year-old was on her bike looking for her dog near McKellips Road and Mesa Drive shortly before 11 a.m.
She told police that a man in a truck approached her and asked her to show him her chest. He also opened his truck door and asked her to get in.
Berry said the girl went home and the suspect drove away.
The teen said she vaguely knew the suspect and that he lived in the area. She was able to provide a suspect and vehicle description.
During the same time, other officers were nearby responding to an unrelated call for service of a mental health detainer on a 47-year-old man. Officers determined that the man was the suspect in the attempted abduction.
Berry said the suspect was questioned and made several admissions but claimed his actions were only to teach the teen of potential dangers.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was transported to a psychiatric care facility on the mental health detainer.
