GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) -- The son of a former NFL player and brother of an "American Idol" winner has signed a letter of intent to play his college football for the University of North Dakota.

P.J. Sparks tells the Grand Forks Herald that he listened to his grandfather when making his choice. Jim Wiedmann played tight end for the Fighting Sioux years ago.

Sparks is a 5-foot-9 running back from Glendale, Ariz. He's the son of former New York Giants and Dallas defensive back Phillippi Sparks and the brother of 2007 "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks.

He initially had given a verbal commitment to play for South Dakota State but changed his mind after listening to his grandfather.

He says UND "puts a sparkle" in his grandfather's eye.
