Downed power lines trap Waste Management garbage truck driverPosted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. – A Waste Management truck driver was trapped in his vehicle for a time after backing into a power pole, causing live power lines to fall on the truck Wednesday morning.
It happened shortly before 7 a.m. on Apache Trail just east of Sossaman Road in Mesa.
While the driver was not injured, he was stuck inside the garbage truck for about 30 minutes until SRP could cut power to the downed lines. Those lines were draped over the back of the vehicle. Staying inside the truck was the safest thing for the driver to do because it kept him clear of the electricity’s path to the ground.
Once SRP turned off the power, the driver was able to safely get out of the garbage truck.
About 50 area residents lost power for a time because of the downed lines.
