1 Dead, 2 injured in Mesa head-on crashPosted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -- Police say alcohol may be to blame for a deadly accident involving six vehicles in Mesa late Monday morning.
According to Sgt. Ed Wessing with the Mesa Police Department, the driver of a Chevy Malibu was traveling westbound on McKellips Road at a very high rate of speed when he moved into the middle lane.
The driver passed several cars going the opposite way then slammed head-on into a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV near Center Street.
Wessing said both men in the Malibu were thrown from the car. One of them died at the scene. The other occupant was transported to a hospital in extremely critical condition.
The driver of the SUV was critically injured but is expected to recover.
The force of the collision threw the Malibu's engine several hundred feet, hitting an unoccupied car in a parking lot.
Other vehicles were damaged by the debris.
Wessing said police found empty beer cans in the Malibu and a full beer can on the street, but they cannot confirm if impairment was a factor in the crash until lab results come back.
The investigation is ongoing.
