ELOY, Ariz. -- A Douglas man was arrested for murder after his cousin's body was found in a canal last month.

On Jan. 22, the Pinal County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call regarding a possible kidnapping that had just taken place at Lamoreaux Farms located near East Greene Reservoir Road and South Picacho Highway in Eloy.

The caller told investigators that his employee, Mauricio Gonzales, 21, who works at the farm, had called a co-worker around 10 p.m. and told him he had been kidnapped.

Sheriff's spokesman Tim Gaffney said patrol deputies went to the farm and located the victim's abandoned work vehicle, his jacket and dinner plate. They also found the victim's footprints and another set, which did not belong to any of the other workers.

On Jan. 27, Gonzales' body was found in a canal near East Baumgartner Road and four miles east of Picacho in Red Rock.

Gaffney said Gonzales had been beaten and bound with duct tape. An autopsy was conducted and the death was ruled a homicide by drowning.

Detectives learned the possible suspect was Gonzales' 18-year-old cousin, Humberto Hernandez-Hernandez. They reportedly had an ongoing dispute over money.

Gaffney said Hernandez was found in possession of marijuana at a home in Douglas on Jan. 28. He was arrested and Pinal County detectives responded to question him regarding the homicide.

On Wednesday, Hernandez was booked into the Pinal County Adult Detention Center for one count each of first-degree murder and kidnapping. He is currently being held on a $2 million bond.
