TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Arizona Department of Public Safety discovered more than 4,000 pounds of marijuana inside a trailer loaded with cattle during a traffic stop last week.

A DPS officer stopped a truck on Interstate 10 east of Tucson for an equipment violation. During an inspection of the vehicle, the officer found 4,535 pounds of marijuana among the 68 head of cattle inside the trailer.

The driver, Juan Francisco Aguayo, was arrested. According to a DPS news release, Aguayo is a Mexican citizen with permanent resident alien status.

DPS records indicate the largest previous seizure of marijuana following a traffic stop was approximately 4,100 pounds, making this seizure the largest of record for the Arizona Highway Patrol Division during a traffic stop.
