Passenger dies after car hits trees, light pole in Avondale

AVONDALE, Ariz. -- An 83-year-old Phoenix woman was killed after the car she was riding in hit two trees and a light pole Tuesday afternoon.
Avondale police and fire departments responded to a single-vehicle accident near 104th Avenue and Thomas Road shortly after noon.
According to Detective Reuben Gonzales with the Avondale Police Department, the vehicle was westbound on Thomas Road when it veered into the opposite lanes. The car hit the curb and drove up onto the sidewalk, striking two trees and a light pole.
Investigators said the passenger, Dorothy Gardiner, was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown into the dashboard and windshield.
The driver, Carol Stewart, 54, of Phoenix, was wearing her seat belt and sustained serious injuries, including a broken leg.
The women were transported to St. Joseph's Hospital where Gardiner was pronounced dead a short time later.
