PHOENIX -- A Phoenix man has been sentenced to prison for the 2009 murder of his wife.

Police said that Primitivo Madrigal Almonte shot his wife at a trailer park near 43rd Avenue and Van Buren Street then waited for officers to arrive.

Almonte was arrested after his wife's body and shell casings were found inside the family car.

Almonte told investigators that he shot his wife because she was "trying to poison him."

He pleaded guilty to manslaughter in October.

On Friday, Judge Karen O'Connor sentenced Almonte to 16 years in prison.
