41 Arrested during sheriff's 18th crime suppression sweepPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX – Maricopa County sheriff's deputies arrested 41 people during a crime suppression sweep on Thursday.
According to Sgt. Jesse Spurgin with the sheriff’s office, 33 suspected illegal immigrants were arrested under human smuggling charges, failure to provide ID and transporting marijuana.
Spurgin said eight others were arrested for drug possession, open warrants, and driving on a suspended license.
He said three load vehicles were stopped.
This is Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s 18th crime suppression sweep, which many feel target illegal immigrants.
This is, however, the first sweep that includes a newly formed Illegal Immigration Enforcement Posse, a group of armed volunteers that were trained to report illegal activity.
More than 1,000 people have been arrested since Arpaio began conducting his crime suppression sweeps.
The operation is expected to run through Friday.
