MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa firefighters were able to quickly extinguish a garage fire that apparently began when a car backfired Thursday afternoon.

A man reportedly was trying to start an old Cadillac inside the garage at his home near Lindsay and Brown roads at approximately 1:30 p.m. When the vehicle started, it backfired and ignited a fire.

"Our crews got here to find a great amount of smoke and flames coming out from the garage area," said Capt. Forrest Smith, spokesman for the Mesa Fire Department.

Smith said it took crews about 17 minutes to stop the spread of the fire.

Smith said the man and a woman were inside the garage at the time. They got out safely with their two dogs.

No injuries were reported and the family was not displaced.
