PHOENIX – A police officer who was involved in a scuffle with a Phoenix City Council member last year is under investigation for an alleged assault while off duty.

The Phoenix Police Department confirmed that Officer Brian Authement was involved in an incident while participating in a sporting event on Jan. 13.

Authement has been accused of assault and has been placed in a “non-enforcement” position.

The investigation is ongoing.

Authement was the officer who handcuffed Phoenix Councilman Michael Johnson last year and reportedly threw him on the ground. Johnson alleged racial bias although the officer claimed Johnson assaulted him.

That case was resolved outside of the legal system.

Authement has worked for the Phoenix Police Department for nearly three years and is assigned to the Squaw Peak Precinct.
