Poverty rate hitting Arizonans hardPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- President Barack Obama is expected to push for job creation Tuesday night during his State of the Union address as Arizonans continue to cope with high energy prices and staggering unemployment.
The U.S. Census Bureau said in September that ranked Arizona near the bottom of the U.S. poverty rate in 2009 behind Mississippi.
According to an Arizona newspaper, Arizona State University's Morrison Institute for Public Policy noted in a December report that expected budget cuts could slam the lower-and middle class and working poor especially even harder if child-care assistance, medical and other aid are slashed by state lawmakers.
Arizona lost about one-tenth of its jobs during the recession, many of them construction and other blue-collar jobs.
