Sleeping man killed when SUV crashes into homePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - A 32-year-old Maryvale man asleep in his bedroom is dead after the driver of an SUV crashed into a home.
At about 4:30 a.m. Phoenix police say Eduardo Arechiga, 21, was apparently impaired while behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Yukon at the intersection of 73rd Avenue and Roma Drive.
Arechiga's 16-year-old brother, who was a passenger in the SUV, was urging his brother to stop when he lost control while doing doughnuts. Police said Arechiga then hit a parked vehicle before crashing into the home.
In addition to the victim, Juan Carlos Mendez, 32, there were four young children inside who were not injured.
Arechiga reportedly fled with a friend who was also at the scene in another vehicle.
Police obtained the friend's phone number and persuaded both men to surrender to nearby police officers. Both men were placed under arrest.
Arechiga faces charges of manslaughter, failure to remain at an injury collision, endangerment and criminal damage.
Arechiga's friend could face charges of hindering prosecution.
