Reid Park Zoo expansionPosted: Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Expansion of the Reid Park Zoo was taking place Thursday morning.
This is the zoo's largest expansion ever, seven acres, which will be home to an African area named Expedition Tarzania.
The first phase of the project will have an elephant care facility, occupying three acres and large enough for six adult elephants.
"We have waited many years for this," said Reid Park Zoo Education Curator Vivian VanPeenen. "Our community has waited many years for this and we're very proud of the partnership that we have between the city and our non-profit Zoological Society that helped bring this to fruition."
The expansion is costing $9.6 million.
The exhibit is expected to open by the end of this year.
