Teen struck, killed by school bus after running into roadPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are investigating a fatal collision between a school bus and a pedestrian early Thursday morning.
Police said the pedestrian, identified as 18-year-old William J. Dent, was not a student being picked up by the bus, but had been a passenger on a city bus.
According to Sgt. Trent Crump, Dent exited the city bus and crossed in front of it into eastbound traffic. That is when he was struck by the school bus.
The school bus was heading to Meyer Elementary School with about 12 students between the ages of 5 and 7 onboard. Crump said there were about 15 passengers on the city bus. Some were older students from other Tempe schools.
Counselors will be at the schools if any of the students need to speak to them. Crump said he didn't think the young students witnessed the bus hitting the victim.
The intersection will remain closed for the next few hours while police continue their investigation.
The family has set up a memorial fund to help with funeral costs, The William Dent Memorial Fund at Wells Fargo, account number 6989459083.
