Jared Loughner: Shooting suspect's parents issue statementPosted: Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. -- The parents of mass shooting suspect and would-be assassin Jared Lee Loughner issued a written statement Tuesday evening.
That statement was distributed by officials with the Federal Public Defender's Office. In it, the Loungners made no mention of their 22-year-old son, who now sits in a federal prison.
Amy and Randy Loughner have been holed up in the home, avoiding the media, since Saturday's shooting and their son's subsequent arrest. A neighbor says the couple is devastated.
Below in the Loughners' statement in its entirety.
"This is a very difficult time for us. We ask the media to respect our privacy.
"There are no words that can possibly express how we feel. We wish that there were, so we could make you feel better.
"We don't understand why this happened.
"It may not make any difference, but we wish that we could change the heinous events of Saturday.
"We care very deeply about the victims and their families. We are so very sorry for their loss.
