Christina Green: Schoolmates mourn the 9-year-old shooting victimPosted: Updated:
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Grief counselors were on hand at Mesa Verde Elementary School Monday to help students and staff cope with the death of a young student.
Christina Taylor Green, 9, was shot in the chest in Saturday's mass shooting at an event hosted by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Green was one of the six people killed at the event. Fourteen more were wounded, including Giffords, who remains in critical condition at University Medical Center in Tucson.
Christina, who was the only girl on her baseball team, had just been elected to her school's student government and had gone to the "Congress on Your Corner" event with a neighbor to meet Giffords and learn more about the political process.
Green's father called her his princess.
"She was born on 9/11, so she came in on a tragedy and now she's gone out on a tragedy," said Christina's father. "But the nine years in between were very special."
Her funeral is set for Thursday at 1 p.m. in Tucson at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
According to The Associated Press, the largest flag recovered from Ground Zero after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center is on its way to Arizona to be displayed at Christina's funeral.
