Brewer says state is grieving but strongPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is pronouncing the state as grieving but strong and united in the face of the shooting that left six people dead and 14 injured, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
Brewer appealed for unity while addressing a joint session of the state Legislature on Monday in her annual State of the State address.
She tossed out her originally planned speech on economic development, education and taxes.
Brewer says the first response to the tragedy must be led by prayer and comfort for the victims and their families.
She says Arizona is in pain and its grief is profound but "we will never be brought down."
