Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, 40, was shot Saturday morning at a community event she was hosting on Tucson's northwest side.  Numerous others were shot as well.

A family friend told Fox 11 News at 12:45 p.m. that she had spoken with the Congresswoman's mother who told her that she is in surgery at University Medical Center.  A spokesperson says she is in critical condition.

Dr. Peter Rhee, chief of trauma at University Medical Center, says the Congresswoman was shot in the head and the bullet exited her skull.  He says surgery is over and he says he is "optimistic" about her recovery.

Law enforcement sources say a suspect is in custody.  He's described as a 22 year old male.  Some media outlets have identified him as Jared Laugher.   A check of records show he was arrested on a drug charge in 2007, but has no other run-ins with law enforcement.

Pima County Sheriff's Department says it happened at a Safeway grocery store at the intersection of Ina and Oracle.  The event was a "Congress on Your Corner" which she has frequently held during her four years in office.  She was sworn in to her third term last week.

As many as 15 others were shot as well by a single gunman who walked up to the Congresswoman and began shooting.

Giffords is a former Arizona state senator.  She was elected to Congress in 2006.

President Barack Obama issued a statement saying the Congresswoman was "gravely wounded" in the shooting.  He said others died.  He asked Americans to keep Ms. Giffords in their prayers.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has ordered flags in Arizona lowered to half staff in memory of the five who died in the shooting.  Brewer said she was "devastated" by the incident.

Numerous others have issued statements condemning the shooting.
