MESA, Ariz. - Maricopa County sheriff's deputies are attempting to identify a body found in a Mesa canal.
Deputies are investigating the scene near Main Street at the Tempe Canal where the body of a man was discovered Monday morning.
A pedestrian reportedly found the body floating face down in the water. Police officers from both Mesa and Tempe responded to the scene shortly after 9 a.m.
MCSO has taken over the investigation. Depending on how long the victim was in the water, forensic experts may not be able to identify him.
Sheriff's spokesman Jeff Sprong confirmed the body recovered from the canal does not belong to Hugh Turner. The 85-year-old has been missing since Christmas Eve and his family recently launched rescue efforts with more than 100 volunteers.
