Tempe robbery leads to police standoff in Mesa

MESA, Ariz. - A man who allegedly robbed a CVS Pharmacy in Tempe early Sunday morning surrendered after a lengthy standoff with police in Mesa.

According to police, the robbery took place at around 5:30 a.m. Sunday at the CVS drugstore on Southern Avenue and Rural Road in Tempe.

Police attempted to apprehend the man after they spotted him in his vehicle shortly after the robbery. The suspect fled, eventually barricading himself in an empty restaurant building at Alma School Road and Southern Avenue near Fiesta Mall.

Tempe SWAT officers, negotiators and dozens of officers from both the Tempe and Mesa police departments surrounded the vacant restaurant and evacuated nearby businesses.

The suspect was apprehended shortly after noon.
