Dead man found inside burned-out Phoenix apartment identifiedPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Police in Phoenix have a mystery on their hands after the body of a man was discovered inside a burned-out studio apartment.
It happened in the neighborhood of 12th Street and Indian School Road. Neighbors reported smoke coming from the second-floor apartment at about 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Firefighters were able to douse the flames quickly. When the fire was out, crews discovered a man's body inside the apartment.
According to Sgt. Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department, the victim has been identified as Eric Cavnar.
Investigators are not sure how long Cavnar, 51, had been in the apartment or what started the fire.
"There was heavy damage inside of that room," said Capt. Jonathan Jacobs of the Phoenix Fire Department. "We believe that this fire had started and had been a smoldering fire for a little while."
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office will determine the manner and cause of death. That will likely take at least a couple of days.
Martos said investigators do not suspect foul play at this time.
