PHOENIX – The family of an injured Phoenix police officer is speaking out about the importance of wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle.

Officer Eric Kral was rushed to the hospital Monday morning after he crashed on Interstate 10 while off-duty. He was not wearing a helmet.

Bill Stanton, his uncle, says, “If Eric could turn back the clock, he would’ve put his helmet on. You talk about Christmas miracles, it’s a miracle he’s alive.”

Officer Kral’s parents and brothers were too grief-stricken to speak at a press conference Thursday afternoon.

Stanton says, “Eric’s grandmother was talking about how this was gonna be the happiest Christmas ever, and then this happened.”

The family was comforted by members of the Phoenix Police Department.

Officer Kral remains in a coma and his long-term prognosis is unclear. His uncle says that if he had worn his helmet, they would be celebrating Christmas at home and not at the hospital.

Kral is a newlywed with two young songs. He wife, Denise, hasn’t left his bedside at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
