GLENDALE - A single-engine experimental plane crashed near Glendale Municipal Airport on Thursday afternoon.
The pilot, 75-year-old Andrew Schaefer of Peoria, was air lifted to the hospital in serious condition. His family says Schaefer underwent emergency surgery for broken bones.
He was the only person on board the experimental Kit Fox plane.
Daniel Valenzuela, with Glendale Fire, says, "Those firefighters ran over to try to help this gentleman extricate himself out of the plane. They immediately treated this person with advanced life support protocols. This person did sustain serious injuries."
The plane landed nose first near the side of the runway, but was still in one piece. Friends say he has decades of experience flying planes.
It is still unclear what caused the plane to crash during a landing attempt.
The FAA and NTSB will investigate the accident and according the FAA it typically takes the NTSB months to come up with a probable cause for an accident.
