Man arrested for string of Mesa bleacher thefts

MESA - Mesa police detectives arrest the suspect believed to be behind a string of bleacher thefts earlier this year.

Alan Lee Smith, 44, was taken into custody Wednesday evening at his home in Mesa.

The bleacher thefts occurred between May and August at 10 different Mesa Public Schools.

Each time large section of bleachers from the football stadiums were stolen with the total value of the stolen property around $21,000.

According to Mesa police, 693 pounds of stolen bleachers were apparently sold as scrap at American Metals in Mesa.

DNA from a drill and wrench left at the scene were matched to Smith.

While in police custody, Smith admitted he was at the recycler, but did not admit he stole the bleachers.

Smith faces charges of trafficking in stolen property, burglary, possession of dangerous drugs and possession of of drug paraphernalia.
