Two in custody for attempting to rob Radio Shack in Surprise

SURPRISE - Two men are in custody for attempting to rob a Radio Shack store located near Bell Road and Grand Avenue.

According to Surprise police, around 10:15 p.m. on Tuesday the store manager closed the store and was in the process of leaving when he realized he forgot something inside the store. At that time the alarm inadvertently went off.

Police who responded to the alarm located the suspects Benjamin Kuehl, 19, and Eric Ruiz, 18, hiding behind a dumpster at the rear of the store.

The pair were found with black ski masks, gloves, empty duffel bags and a simulated semi-automatic pistol.

Kuehl and Ruiz told police their plan was to rob the Radio Shack manager as he left with the nightly deposit.

Kuehl was was charged with armed robbery with a deadly weapon, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Ruiz was charged with armed robbery with a deadly weapon and false reporting to law enforcement.

Both were booked into Maricopa County Jail.
