MARICOPA - The Maricopa Fire Department battled a major tire fire near the railroad tracks for much of the day on Thursday.

The fire closed down the Union Pacific Railroad tracks due to heavy smoke that was blowing in that direction.

The fire burned just south of the tracks near Edwards Road with the heavy smoke blowing north.

The illegally dumped tires covered about a 30-foot by 30-foot area.

Crews covered the area with approximately 24 inches of dirt, which successfully contained all the smoke.

The Maricopa Fire Department advised residents with a history of breathing problems to stay indoors with their windows closed, but that advisory ended around 5 p.m.

The fire started Thursday morning. An investigation into the cause of the fire is now under way.
