PHOENIX -- Police said a man found shot to death in his home Monday night is the father of a 6-year-old boy found dead in a Phoenix alley Tuesday morning.

A sanitation worker discovered the body of Xavier Daniel Jaquez in an alley behind a home near 65th Avenue and Indian School Road Tuesday morning. That scene is right across from Holiday Park School.

Investigators say the child's parents had joint custody. His body was left in an alley behind his mother's home in west Phoenix although his father was supposed to be watching him at the time.

The boy was not reported missing because the mother believed Xavier was with his father. Police are now trying to determine the child's whereabouts between Monday morning and Tuesday morning when he was found dead.

Police say the boy's 27-year-old father, Angel Jaquez, was found shot to death Monday night at his home near 27th Street and Broadway Road in Phoenix.

According to police, the father and son had similar wounds, however, the exact cause of death has not been determined.

Police think the family was targeted and the larger community is not in jeopardy. Sgt. Trent Crump, with Phoenix police, says, "We believe this family was targeted, at least this father was the target of something in this case but don't know what yet."

The boy's father had a criminal past involving a drug conviction. His lawyer says he was not a serious criminal while neighhbors say he was a devoted dad.

Police detained six or seven people for questioning, but they have been released. No arrests have been made in this case. Detectives are hoping a surveillance camera outside of Angel Jaquez' home will help them find a suspect.
