Chandler father arrested for murder after baby diesPosted: Updated:
CHANDLER, Ariz. -- A 21-year-old Chandler man is facing child abuse and murder charges in the death of his baby daughter.
Shortly after 8 a.m. Monday, Chandler police officers responded to a home near Frye and Alma School roads to assist Chandler firefighters with an unresponsive 7-month-old girl.
Detective Frank Mendoza said the baby and her 2-year-old brother were in the care of their father, Sergio Thomas, who is separated from the children's mother.
In an interview with police, Thomas said he was frustrated with his daughter for waking him up in the middle of the night. According to court paperwork, Thomas admitted shaking his daughter, slapping her face and hitting her on the back of the head.
The child was transported to a local hospital where doctors determined she had a skull fracture and bleeding on her brain.
Due to her injuries, the baby was air-lifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital where she died Tuesday morning.
Thomas was charged with two counts of child abuse and one count of first-degree murder.
In August, Thomas was arrested for domestic violence in which his wife and daughter were injured.
