ID released airman killed in car crash; Arizona soldier to be laid to rest

We know the name of the airman killed Saturday in a car crash near I-10 and Kolb.

Brian Smith was 23-years old. Senior airman smith was assigned to the 923rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron and was active duty.

He's been at Davis-Monthan since 2008.  Officials haven't said much about the crash except that it happened around 4:30 in the morning and Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. 

DPS is investigating the crash.

Smith is from Simi Valley, California.


The funeral for a show low-born soldier who died in Afghanistan will be in his new home of Farmington, New Mexico.

Sergeant First Class Jim Thode was killed by a roadside bomb December 2 during his second tour of duty.

Thode was a graduate of Catalina High School and the U of A, but later moved to farmington to serve as a police sergeant.

The date is still pending.
