MESA, Ariz. - Mesa police say a former Motor Vehicle Division employee was using their job to help traffic drugs.
Mesa police arrested 12 people and seized $300,000 worth of methamphetamine and cocaine along with firearms.
The suspects are accused of running a multi-state drug trafficking ring out of Mexico.
Officers say someone in the MVD was providing the suspected drug traffickers and illegal immigrants with photo IDs.
"The organization was responsible for multi-kilogram shipments of cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana into the U.S. and across the Arizona border," Chief Frank Milstead said. "These drugs were able to work their way into New York, New Mexico, Michigan and Arkansas."
The Arizona Department of Corrections is cooperating with Mesa police on the investigation and say the suspect who is a former employee of the MVD was fired in 2007.
