Mesa man faces murder charge in death of girlfriend's sonPosted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -- A Mesa man was charged with first-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend's 4-year-old son.
At approximately 4 p.m. Friday, Mesa police officers responded to Banner Baywood Hospital for a report of an injured child. Medical staff reported that the boy had massive head trauma and bruising on his body.
Due to his injuries, the child was air-lifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital and was not expected to survive.
The boy's mother was at work at the time of the injury. She told detectives that she left her son in the care of her boyfriend, Jorge Busso, 23, at their home near Broadway Road and 89th Street.
According to Mesa police spokesman Detective Steve Berry, Busso said that he was at home with the child when he smelled a foul odor and realized the boy had soiled himself.
Busso reportedly pushed the boy into a corner and spanked him with a belt, striking him on the forearms, buttocks, back and face, as punishment.
According to Berry, Busso claimed that when he was trying to hold the child in the corner, he hit his head on the wall, causing the injury.
When the victim's mother arrived home from work, she found the unresponsive child lying in bed and took him to the hospital.
The boy died Sunday night.
Busso originally was booked for one count of child abuse and one count of false reporting. Following the boy's death, Busso is now charged with one count of first-degree murder.
He was given no bond and will remain in jail due to his non-resident status.
