Coats for Kids drive under way

PHOENIX -- The New Coats for Kids Drive takes place today until 7 p.m. in the Desert Ridge Mall outside Wolfley's Neighborhood Grill, 21001 N. Tatum Blvd., Phoenix.

Yetta Gibson was there as the drive kicked off and got the lowdown from Rich Bauer of United Phoenix Firefighters Association.

Firefighters kicked off the drive by buying $2,000 worth of new coats.

Bauer said their goal is to collect 3,000 new coats.

According to firefighters, the biggest need is for coats sized for from infant to 12 years old.

"One of the things people don't realize is that out of the homeless people, 50 percent of them are under the age of 6," Bauer said. "That's why is so important that we're just focusing on children's coats."

There will also be an opportunity to enter to win a 2011 Custom Bourget Motorcycle valued at $65,000 to be given away on April 4, 2011. Raffle tickets are $20 each. If you donate a coat, you can get a ticket for $15. Proceeds from the raffle benefit firefighter charities.
