Student pilot makes belly landing in desert near Surprise

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- A student pilot received minor injuries after making an emergency landing in the far northwest Valley Wednesday morning.
According to Surprise fire Capt. John Klidas, the tires came off when the single-engine Piper made a belly landing shortly before 11 a.m. in the desert near 187th Avenue and West Dove Valley Road. The crash site is near the Chrysler Corp. Proving Grounds.
The pilot, Fuzheng Qiao, 21, received minor injuries and was air-lifted to a local hospital.
Klidas said Qiao was working on getting his solo hours.
The plane belongs to the TransPac Aviation Academy out of Deer Valley Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.
