Man with knife arrested after shoplifting beer in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Tempe police officers arrested an Apache County man after he reportedly shoplifted beer from a convenience store and threatened a clerk with a knife Sunday night.
According to the Tempe Police Department, Ron Junior Halona, 36, of Sawmill, Ariz., entered the 7-Eleven at University and McClintock drives shortly after 7 p.m. and then tried to leave without paying for a 12-pack of beer.
Police said the clerk stepped in front of the door and Halona brandished a knife in a threatening manner. The clerk stepped aside and Halona fled on foot.
The victim called police.
A witness saw Halona run to a nearby McDonald's restaurant and officers were able to take him into custody without incident. Halona reportedly had the knife and beer in his possession.
According to police, Halona admitted his involvement in the robbery and said he robbed the store because he was "hungry."
Halona was booked into Tempe City Jail and is facing an armed robbery charge.
