Stocking stuffer pizazz

Posted: Updated:

Filling and emptying a stocking is one of my favorite parts of the holiday season.  And I think a spirited sock is fun for all ages.  From Target to the unique kiosks in the malls, I went shopping for stocking stuffers, so read on for unique ideas and see the segment to see the stuff.

Arrowhead Center Mall in Glendale houses a unique store called Game Daze that is filled with activities and games for all ages.  Here are a few games that are small enough to fit in a stocking and work well for travel activities:

-Spot It! consists of 55 round cards adorned with pictures of multiple objects that challenge players’ speed and memory.  Fun for ages 7 to adult, so the entire family can play.  And for us 40 or older group, I believe memory games are recommended as a good exercise for the aging brain!  $11.99 at Game Daze.

-Another fun and funny card game called We Didn’t Play Test This At All works with 2 to 10 players in 1 to 10 minutes.  Random cards result in winners based on height and other zany factors resulting in laughter and pure chaos, which teenagers find entertaining.  $9.99 for the deck at Game Daze.

-Mini key chains Checkers and Connect Four contain tiny magnetic pieces, so playing on the road is easy and fun.  Game Daze also sells a mini Candyland, too.  All sell for $6.99.

Target dollar deals fill a stocking without emptying a wallet.  A tube of glitter body wash for a tween girl, mini chocolate Santa’s and more are housed at all local Targets by the front entrance.

Also at Target in the men’s section is a display of small gift items in Target red boxes that include items like a $5 2-in-1 laser pointer pen that works for my son and for our cats, who love to chase the laser light for exercise.  Grooming sets, an alarm clock with the weather forecast and other great gift ideas are all Target brands boxed to be gifted.

Another great stocking stuffer is a phone cover.  I get asked all the time where I got my own unique Droid cover.  My own cell phone provider only sells a few covers, so the truly colorful types are sold at a kiosk in the malls called Cellairis Mobile Accessories.  Watch the segment to see the bright and bling covers I bought for myself and for my tween.  Two cell phone covers sell for $20 or one studded jewel stoned cover goes for $30.  Pricey but unique, these covers have protected my phone each and every time that I have dropped my cell!

Since my daughter got her ears pierced, we are now frequent shoppers at Claire’s and this place is packed with all kinds of gift ideas.  One cool hair decoration that is simple to
style is hair stickers.  For $5.50, I bought two medium sized silver flowers for my daughter’s stocking.  And even though we live in sunny Arizona, every time it does actually rain, my daughter gets caught after school without an umbrella, so I bought the compact poka dot umbrella tote for her stylish stockings.   A miniature floral high top tennis shoe that has a clip for notes sells for $5 and will not only fit in my daughter’s stocking, but will be used for important reminders as well.

Over at Glass Cage Sports in Glendale, I got a pack of pens with the Arizona Cardinals logo for $5 that my son will enjoy finding in his stocking.  I also found NFL key chains and all kinds of items decorated with mascots from college and pro teams across the nation.

Hallmark stores always have the most innovative gift items and Stacy’s Hallmark in Glendale did not disappoint.  In fact all of the Hallmark stores Valley-wide have a great selection of gifts.  I left with long, skinny sticks filled with flavored cocoas like Toffee Fudge and Marshmallow Fudge that will fit perfectly in my kids’ stockings.  A bit pricey at $7.98 a tube, but they are decorated in holiday décor.  Hallmark also had cute miniature snow globes with polar bears and cats inside and small personalized key chains.

Stockings usually have chocolate Santas and reindeers, so it was fun to find an adorable milk chocolate walrus and penguin at Safeway.  Housed in red boxes, the line is called North Pole Pals.  And if you are a Godiva fan like me, consider the red and green candy coated balls are packaged in a box that looks like a gift.  Or throw in a few single truffles.  You won’t believe how tasty the apple pie chocolates taste!  Sound weird, but delicious.  I found these items at the Godiva stores in the malls.

The Body Shop has scented soaps and all natural items as you would expect, but the store also has some great items made from recycled water bottles.  The $8 Skin Sponge and compact makeup bags were once water bottles and now serve as green stocking stuffers.

The actual stockings that I displayed in the segment are from Frontgate.com, but I ordered them several years back, so the company may not have those particular styles.  Frontgate does have some unique and fancy stockings, as well as fun pet socks, too.  I also noticed that Target sells fun bright colored stockings in purple and green, too.

So now that my stockings are stuffed, hopefully there were some ideas in this column that will fill your family’s festive holiday socks.  Have a fun and safe holiday and here’s wishing that your shopping is done so you can have some festive fun!
