4 Injured in school bus wreck in SurprisePosted: Updated:
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- One person was flown to the hospital and three more, including a teen, were transported by ground after a school bus and a Chevy Blazer SUV collided Monday morning.
It happened just before 7 a.m. in the area of Greenway Road and Cotton Lane in Surprise, northwest of Phoenix.
According to the Phoenix Fire Department, the bus ran into a wall after it was hit by the SUV.
Aerial video from the scene showed the black SUV with its front end completely smashed. Firefighters had to extricate the driver from that vehicle. The driver was air-lifted to St. Joseph's Hospital. That person's condition was not immediately available.
There reportedly were three people aboard the Dysart Unified School District bus at the time of the wreck -- the driver, a bus aide and a 15-year-old male student. All three were taken to a local hospital via ground ambulance. None of their injuries appeared to be life threatening. All three are expected to be fine.
Sgt. Mark Ortega of the Surprise Police Department said witnesses told investigators that the SUV veered into oncoming traffic, hitting the bus head-on. It's not clear what caused the SUV to veer into the other lane.
"This could have been a lot worse," Ortega said.
The wreck is under investigation.
Greenway Road was shut down while emergency crews and police were on the scene.
Drivers were being advised to use Bell or Waddell roads as alternates.
